First steps can seem tough, but they get easier. The same can be said for home dialysis.

Taking your first step seemed tough, but you did it anyway. And it got easier.
When you started riding a bike, the first pedal seemed hard. Then it just got easier.
The same can be said for home dialysis.
It can seem challenging at the beginning, but it gets easier.
WHEN KIDNEYS DON'T WORK
Being diagnosed with kidney failure is difficult, but you can take steps to make your path ahead smoother. Start by educating yourself and having an informed discussion with your doctor. With the right approach and armed with sufficient information, you can be more prepared to take the first steps of your treatment journey.
CHOOSING YOUR NEXT STEP

PERITONEAL DIALYSIS (PD)
Peritoneal dialysis (PD) is a treatment that uses the lining of your abdomen - called the peritoneal membrane - to remove waste products from your blood. PD allows a flexible treatment schedule, as it can be done at home or work and either during the day or during sleep.

HAEMODIALYSIS (HD)
Haemodialysis (HD) uses a machine and a synthetic membrane (called a dialyser) to filter your blood. HD can be done at a hospital or clinic three times a week (3-5 hours), or at home, where you can enjoy being in your own house for your treatment.

TRANSPLANT
A kidney transplant is a surgical operation where a healthy kidney from a donor is placed in your body. This new kidney will filter your blood and remove excess fluids the way your two kidneys would if they were healthy. If your overall health is good, you may be a candidate for a transplant, however you may still need to be on dialysis before a transplant.

CONSERVATIVE CARE
If it is felt that neither dialysis nor kidney transplant is the right option for you, you may consider conservative care. Conservative care focuses on controlling your symptoms and maintaining your quality of life.
TALKING TO YOUR DOCTOR
Talk to your doctor about kidney failure and options for your care. Being educated and informed is important to having a great conversation with your doctor and deciding on the right option for you.
